The Market for ADUs
Accessory dwelling units (ADUs) address many current deficiencies in the housing market: small homes are a good fit for young couples, empty nesters, and seniors; and in popular and established urban neighborhoods, they provide a relatively affordable alternative to pricey single family homes.
However, it’s still largely unknown what role ADUs play in the housing market as a whole. Are they a niche form of development, or will they continue to increase in numbers and help grow our cities? Will they become a mainstream real estate product with their own financing mechanisms? How do ADU rents compare to apartments and traditional homes?
This session will cover some of the newest research on ADUs in the housing market and attempt to locate these small backyard homes within the big picture of housing.
